SPARK Mentoring Program Yearlong Select 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students participate in an after school mentoring program. Volunteers are needed. (contact Ms. Hamm)
Green School Yearlong Banneker ES is a Green School. Various events throughout the year promote the recycle, reuse, and reduce philosophy. Keep your eye out for our Beautification Day! (contact Ms. Goldsmith)
Safety Patrols Yearlong AAA sponsors the Safety Patrol Program in which 5th graders are selected as role models who help to keep students safe on the bus.(contact- Ms. Davis-Smith)
ELMS/Sotterly Trips Yearlong SMCPS Environmental Field Trips for students grades in all grades. The trip activities are aligned to our science standards. (contact your teacher)
PTA Events Ongoing Our PTA sponsors several free events throughout the year! Contact them to get involved! (contact PTA)
School Improvement Team Meetings (SIT) TBD

Staff, students, and community members are invited to discuss school improvement. 

Morning News Daily 5th graders present a news program broadcasted to all classrooms. (contact Mrs. Dean or Mrs. Campbell)
Grades 3-5 Awards Assemblies Quarterly Students are recognized for excelling in academics, bus behavior, good character and attendance. Parents are invited (contact an IRT)
Red Ribbon Week October There will be daily themes and messages to promote healthy decisions. (contact Mrs. Watkins)
Character Stroll October 27 Students are asked to dress up like their favorite book character and (with their book) the student body takes a stroll around the campus to share their costumes.
Bus Driver Appreciation Week October

Students, staff, and PTA will take the opportunity to thank our wonderful bus drivers! (contact Ms. Davis-Smith or PTA)

Math Team October-April, SMECO Challenge - April Selected 4th and 5th graders practice for and participate in the SMECO Math Challenge. (contact your teacher)
Principal’s Council October - June Students in 5th grade are selected as class representatives to work with Mr. Szczerbiak and staff members to support our school.

MISA Mayland Integrated Science Assessment Program

Second Semester MISA Science is administered to 5th graders only. (contact IRT)
Career Day Winter Students learn about careers in a variety of ways. Community members interested in becoming a guest speaker are encouraged to contact Mrs. Watkins.
Winter and Spring Concerts Winter and Spring Band, Strings and Chorus (grades 4-5) will perform on one night. (contact your music teacher)
MCAP - Spring Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program End of April - Early June MCAP is our state assessment for Math and Language Arts administered to 3rd, 4ths and 5th graders (contact IRT)
Staff Appreciation Week May 1-5 Our opportunity to show the BBES staff how much they are appreciated. (PTA will provide more information)
Volunteer Appreciation Spring Volunteers are appreciated for their contributions to the Banneker community! (contact Kelly Gray)
Field Day June 2 (tentative) All students and staff participate in a variety of fitness activities. (contact a PE teacher)
5th Grade Picnic June 5th grade teachers, students, and families gather to celebrate student successes during their elementary years! (contact your 5th grade teacher)
Yearbook Yearbooks come out at the end of the year BBES publishes a yearbook featuring school events and students in all grades. (contact Ms. Hamm)

Banneker Fundraisers for School and Charities

Event Dates Description
PTA Fundraisers Ongoing Our PTA sponsors fundraisers throughout the year, such as spirit wear sales, local restaurant spirit nights, food sales, and more. These fundraisers make the PTA free events and other school support purchases possible! PTA also includes drives to support those in need in our area, such as their annual coat drive (contact PTA)
BBES Square One Art October - December Products can be purchased with student art displayed. Funds go to BBES for the specialists' events and supplies. (contact the art teachers)
BBES Student Pictures Fall and Spring Student pictures are taken in the Fall and Spring; families have the opportunity to purchase picture packages through the company. Funds go to BBES for class equipment, and supplies.
BBES Book Fairs-Scholastic Book Sale Fall and Spring Family volunteers help to run a week-long book fair. The funds support our Media Center. (contact Mrs. Dean or Mrs. Campbell)
Jump Rope for Heart Winter This includes a wellness event. Students seek sponsors to support the American Heart Association (contact your PE teacher)
